This year, delegates can look forward to not only a brand new venue but also a brand new programme of innovative emergency CPD from organisers, Vets Now.
Taking feedback on board from previous delegates, ECC specialist at Vets Now, Dan Lewis has led the programme committee to create an even more inclusive agenda for vets and vet nurses totalling 70 CPD hours.
World-renowned consultant anaesthetist in human medicine Professor Kevin Fong is the keynote speaker and delivered a welcome plenary session – a first at Congress – about risk management: life, death and mistakes.
Professor Fong, who wrote the acclaimed book Extreme Medicine, speaks to medical professionals all over the world and whilst he’s a medically-trained doctor, author, and TV presenter, he also studied astrophysics and space medicine, therefore his specialism lies in working in extreme environments.
ECC specialist and Congress programme lead, Dan Lewis, said: “Our mission is to bring the world’s leading ECC experts together in one room to share our knowledge with vets and vet nurses and I’m delighted to welcome record numbers of attendees to Congress this year. We were excited to open Congress 2019 and to deliver fresh and inspiring content for our delegates.”
Joining a stellar line-up within the leading veterinary conference programme is leading emergency vet Ken Drobatz, Professor of Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania. Ken covered a year in review of the professions and he also drilled into detail around altered mentation and dealing with respiratory distress.
With state-of-the-art conference facilities, spacious exhibition area and impressive Gala dinner space at New Dock Hall, The Royal Armouries in Leeds has provided the ideal base to grow what is already the largest event dedicated to emergency veterinary medicine within the UK.
The new venue in Leeds has allowed organisers to evolve to a more expansive and inclusive event format.
Dan was most excited about introducing brand new wellness, business and culture streams.
He added: “We’ve expanded the Congress programme extensively this year. And no matter what stage you’re at with your career, whether you’re a new graduate through to a certificate holder, and regardless of your experience in ECC – there is a relevant CPD stream to suit you.”

Vets Now’s Amanda Boag, who is currently RCVS Past-President, introduced an honest, frank conversational stream around “The first time I…”. These were delivered by the ECC specialist/referral teams who took delegates back to the first time they dealt with some of the most challenging cases you could see in emergency medicine.
Selling out in record time this year, the ECC Congress was established by Vets Now in 2004 to provide innovative training to the veterinary profession. It has since grown into one of the biggest events of its kind in Europe— offering delegates more than 70 hours of CPD under one roof, delivered across a stimulating and diverse range of lectures, discussion forums, debate and interactive workshops.
