VOA offers a complete CPD package for osteoarthritis care

The Veterinary Osteoarthritis Alliance (VOA) is delighted to introduce a complete osteoarthritis (OA) package, designed to give vets the knowledge, clinical skills, tools, support and confidence to implement an OA clinic in their own practice.

The VOA course can ultimately give them the opportunity to offer a more complete and more effective treatment and management strategy for osteoarthritis patients. Included in the package is a two-day residential course for two vets or a vet and nurse (theory and practical), an extensive range of OA tools for the practice, regular follow up visits by our expert team, ongoing tailored support for 12 months, and a network of colleagues and consultants.

The residential course (24-25 June 2019, Yorkshire) is hosted by experts within the osteoarthritis field including Professor Stuart Carmichael BVMS MVM DSAO FRCVS, Marge Chandler DVM MS MANZCVSc DACVN DACVIM DECVIM-CA MRCVS, Dr. David Prydie BVMS CertSAO MRCVS and Hannah Capon BA VetMB MRCVS. Further details of the speakers are below. Extensive opportunities are given for both theoretical learning in lectures, and hands-on experience in practical sessions, ranging from harvesting bone marrow to intra-articular injections and then to physiotherapy for the OA patient. The lectures include a broad range of topics from the initial OA clinical examination, through treatment options, both surgical and non-surgical, pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals and the importance of physiotherapy and nutrition in the management of OA.

The OA clinic package also includes a vast array of tools designed to aid vets in the management of OA in practice; a goniometer and chart of values for correct measuring within clinical examinations, and access to Smart Mobility Survey to assist with client identification of OA patients, as well as licences for Aim-OA. The total for the OA Clinic Package for 12 months (all inclusive) is £2990 + VAT per practice. This includes two delegates for the residential CPD course and is broken down into an initial payment of £790 + VAT, followed by £200 + VAT per month for the remaining 11 months. The residential course on its own is £990 + VAT per person (£1790 + VAT for two vets/nurses from same practice).

Speakers for the 2-day residential course include Professor Stuart Carmichael who runs a veterinary professional consultancy business, Joint Adventures, and is director and founder of Aim OA Sys – an online system for recording and managing chronic osteoarthritis in dogs. Dr David Prydie is an RCVS Recognised Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Orthopaedics and a co-director of Aim OA Sys, he also currently owns and runs Physio-Vet, a dedicated small animal physiotherapy practice in Cheshire. Marge Chandler brings another branch of knowledge to the course, as a consultant in small animal nutrition and honorary senior lecturer in internal medicine and clinical nutrition at the University of Edinburgh.

Hannah Capon founded Canine Arthritis Management (CAM), a business that she started after noticing the large numbers of dogs that were euthanised due to poorly managed arthritis. Karen Cook BA VetMB BSc (Hons) MRCVS has a keen interest in regenerative medicine and helps educate and train vets in the practical application of intra-articular injections in the management of osteoarthritis. Kay Webb MCSP Grad Dip Phys PG Dip Vet Phys ACPAT Cat A is a Chartered Physiotherapist and Animal Physiotherapist, and her work with long term development disability patients has proven to be key when equipping owners with the confidence, knowledge and skills to carry out a physiotherapy programme with their animals.
