Developing a milk-from-grass specialism for spring block-calving herds can be a good business or career move for vets, according to Dave Gilbert of Dairy Insight.
AHDB Dairy says tight block calving is becoming more common and identifies it as one of their optimal dairy systems. However, Dave Gilbert says lack of year-round fertility work can make these farms difficult to engage with.
“One way to overcome this,” Dave suggests, “is to become known as a specialist.”
In response to demand, Dairy Insight is running an additional “Milk From Grass” course on 2 and 3 March 2022, in Shropshire.
Trainers Phil Alcock and Dave Gilbert will cover building a tailored service for block calving herds; the grass cycle, nutrition and trouble-shooting common problems; and cow fertility drivers, management programs and critical KPIs.
