Final VMG CVPM recipients announced

The VMG CVPM provides a benchmark for employers seeking veterinary management expertise

Two veterinary managers have been awarded the Veterinary Management Group’s Certificate in Veterinary Practice Management (CVPM), the industry-standard qualification recognising excellence in veterinary management. The successful candidates, who completed their studies during 2020 and passed the examination in January, are:

  • Helen McHugh, Practice Manager at the Orchard Veterinary Centre, Nottingham
  • Nikki Graham, Practice Manager at the Rutland and Kings Veterinary Centre, Rutland.

The VMG CVPM provides a benchmark for employers seeking veterinary management expertise as holders have demonstrated that they are capable of being dropped into any veterinary practice and performing effectively across a range of key areas.

Commenting on her achievement, Helen McHugh said: “I have worked in veterinary practice for over 23 years and been a manager for the past 16 years. I felt the CVPM would acknowledge all the skills and knowledge I had acquired over the years. I am thrilled and proud that I have passed my certificate and it gives me confidence in my role. I am hoping it will give me more opportunities to support my peers and lead to other career opportunities in the future.”

Nikki Graham said: “Personal and professional development is very important to me and the CVPM is something I have wanted to do for such a long time. Achieving it gives me confidence in my ability to support my colleagues and the practice, both now and in the future.’’

Incoming Chair of the VMG Certification and Training Committee, Matthew Horobin, said: “As COVID-19 has challenged veterinary business even more than usual over the last year, the role played by practice leaders and management has been in the spotlight. If their practice manager holds the CVPM, veterinary businesses know that they are in knowledgeable and experienced hands. We congratulate Helen and Nikki on their achievement.”

Helen and Nikki are the final candidates to study for the CVPM. During 2021 it will be replaced as the Veterinary Management Group (VMG) launches a suite of new qualifications in veterinary business, leadership and management as part of its campaign to support and promote 21st century leadership across the sector. The qualifications are the first veterinary-specific taught courses to incorporate all three Institute of Leadership and Management Level 5 qualifications: Award, Certificate and Diploma; meaning that learners will be dual-certified with an ILM as well as VMG qualification. Their launch follows the publication of the VMG’s evidence-based Leadership Standards Framework with the qualifications mapping onto the domains and required competencies it sets out for each level of responsibility.

The Veterinary Management Group (VMG) is the professional association for all those in leadership and management roles in the veterinary sector. Its mission is to inspire and empower veterinary leaders and their organisations to learn, share, and grow.
