Veterinary charity Pet Blood Bank UK has this month announced the winners in their Heart of Pet Blood Bank Award, with vet practices Dick Vets Hospital for Small Animals, Pool House Veterinary Hospital, Lawrence Veterinary Centre, and Lime Trees Vets being recognised for their outstanding support over 2019-20.
The Heart of Pet Blood Bank Awards seek to recognise inspiring people, practices, and dogs who go the extra mile to support the charity in collecting and distributing lifesaving blood products.
The Host Venue Award celebrates the vet practices who provide Pet Blood Bank with space and facilities to run their donation sessions, but who also go above and beyond to support the charity and its work. The Dick Vets Hospital for Small Animals at Edinburgh University took the top prize as winner. They have been supporting Pet Blood Bank by hosting donation sessions since 2015 and during this time, has grown them into hugely successful events.
Pool House Veterinary Hospital in Lichfield and Lawrence Veterinary Centre in Nottingham were runners up in the Host Venue category for their dedication to supporting blood donation sessions. Both of these practices have hosted sessions since 2013 and continue, along with Dick Vets, to go above and beyond to ensure lifesaving blood can be collected. All three practices have also gone the extra mile in supporting the charity through the pandemic.
Additionally, Lime Trees Vets in Stoke-on-Trent was recognised with the Fundraising Award for their fantastic support of Pet Blood Bank with their 2019 spinathon event. For 36 continuous hours, the practice team took it in turns to cycle on stationary spin bikes to raise money and awareness for the charity. The passion, enthusiasm, and creativity shown by the practice with this event was incredible. In total, they raised £1,780.
All four practices were presented with their awards at a virtual awards ceremony hosted by Pet Blood Bank on Tuesday 2 March 2021.
Nicole Osborne from Pet Blood Bank UK said, “The support we receive from veterinary practices across the UK continues to blow us away. Every practice recognised in our Heart Awards for 2019-20, and indeed many other practices who work with us, has made an outstanding contribution to supporting our work. As a charity, we are so lucky to have such wonderful, passionate, and dedicated people around us. It makes me so proud to be a part of this industry.”
Pet Blood Bank is the only charity offering a lifesaving blood service for all dogs across the UK. Just like the human blood service, dog owners kindly bring their much loved companions to give blood at one of the charity’s many donation sessions across the country. This blood is then processed and stored, ready to be sent out to vets when they need it for a patient. The blood is truly lifesaving with every donation having the potential to help save up to four other dogs.
Pet Blood Bank also offers a free advice service and on demand CPD webinars for veterinary professionals, alongside providing lifesaving blood products for patients.
