Improve Veterinary Education, rebranded from Improve International, and the International School of Veterinary Postgraduate Studies (ISVPS) has launched My Veterinary Career for vets and vet nurses at the London Vet Show.
My Veterinary Career is a points-based pathway that will enable veterinary professionals to structure their training and qualifications around different clinical routes for clearer career progression.
With this new pathway, vets and vet nurses can gain points by achieving different ISVPS qualifications.
In 2023, mini modular programmes will also be released to help delegates accumulate more points for the My Veterinary Career pathway.
Once enough points have been reached, veterinary professionals will be awarded the ultimate qualification: an ISVPS Master General Practitioner or an ISVPS Lead Veterinary Nurse Practitioner.
The 2019 survey of the veterinary profession by the ies reported that 55.2 percent of vets said they did not feel rewarded/valued in the profession.
Additionally, the FVE Survey of the veterinary profession in Europe claimed that in the UK, 40 percent of vets and nurses wished to leave the industry.
So, the My Veterinary Career has been introduced to tackle a growing concern in the veterinary community, with a high percentage of professionals wanting to leave the profession and feeling that they cannot progress their careers.
In other countries in which Improve Veterinary Education operates felt the same, with 51 percent in Portugal, 32 percent in Spain, 27 percent in Denmark, 25 percent in Germany and 17 percent in France.
To address this concern, My Veterinary Career will also launch outside of the UK in the near future.
The 2021 RCVS recruitment, retention and return in the veterinary profession preliminary report found that vets holding Advanced Practitioner status expressed a greater desire to stay in the profession compared to those without this additional status.
With My Veterinary Career, vets and vet nurses will now have a clearer pathway to advance their careers and they will be able to develop a bespoke learning journey.
David Babington, one of the founders of Improve International and current Academic and Product Development Director, said: “The veterinary industry is incredibly rewarding and we want to match this with people’s postgraduate learning.
“We are excited to work with vets and vet nurses as they join My Veterinary Career and see them excel in ways they are very much capable of doing.”
