Refreshed competitive pet insurance policy for pre-existing health conditions

New features include a £7,000 vet fee limit that includes £1,500 for pre-existing conditions, flexible co-payment and excess options and vet fee limits that refresh each year

Pet health and insurance brand ManyPets has launched a refreshed pet insurance product dedicated to pets with pre-existing conditions.

The updated policy, called “Pre-existing”, removes the complexity and ambiguity seen in pre-existing offers from other providers.

It is the most competitive off-the-shelf pre-existing cover in the market, providing higher vet fee cover and flexible payment options.

Features include a £7,000 vet fee limit that includes £1,500 for pre-existing conditions, flexible co-payment and excess options and vet fee limits that refresh each year.

First launched in 2017, ManyPets’ stand-alone pre-existing product was specifically designed to cover pre-existing conditions that have needed treatment, medication or advice in the past two years.

After searching millions of lines of search data, ManyPets found it was one of the top reasons people were searching for insurance but the available cover was limited and ambiguous.

Five years on, pre-existing conditions remains a big barrier for pet parents looking for the best pet insurance deals. In a recent survey of 2,490 pet owners, it was found that over a quarter (27 percent) have pets with pre-existing conditions. However, 59 percent feel trapped with their current insurance provider because of their pet’s medical history and 82 percent would be interested in switching to other insurers.

The ManyPets pre-existing product sits alongside its suite of pet insurance policies which all include cover for conditions that ended two years ago, providing the pet has not needed treatment, medication or advice for that particular condition.

This means pets and owners are not penalised for the pet’s medical history.

Steven O’Callaghan, head of UK insurance product innovation at ManyPets UK: “We don’t believe pet owners should be penalised because their pet has a pre-existing health condition or because of their past medical history.

“Unfortunately, many pet insurers see pre-ex as black and white; if a pet has suffered from an illness in the past they won’t cover it because they believe they could experience it again.

“We don’t do that. Our updated product gives peace of mind should the issue flare up again, and if it doesn’t, after two years of no treatment, medication or advice, we’ll cover it like a new condition.

“We want to make it easier for pet parents to find the best insurance and health plan that works for their pet. Switching pet insurance should be as simple as with car or home insurance.

“Owners shouldn’t feel trapped with their current providers and with more inclusive policies like this, will be able to shop around for added benefits, features like dental cover, higher vet fee cover or simply a better deal.”
