RCVS Academy launches induction to help new veterinary graduates get the best out of the VetGDP

The induction is the latest module to be added to the RCVS Academy, which includes content about effective workplace delegation, leadership, understanding the RCVS guidance on ownership and consent, and how to resolve complaints

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Academy, a free digital learning platform that aims to support veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses in meeting their professional standards, has launched an induction programme for new graduate vets to help them get the best out of the Veterinary Graduate Development Programme (VetGDP).

The VetGDP was introduced last year to provide work-based support for new veterinary graduates from a dedicated 1:1 coach within their workplace, to help their transition from veterinary studies to veterinary work, by developing their clinical and professional capabilities so that they can become competent, resilient members of the veterinary team.

The RCVS Academy induction programme explains how the VetGDP supports graduates’ professional development and what you can expect from your VetGDP Adviser. VetGDP Advisers are specially trained veterinary surgeons and are there to help the graduate complete the VetGDP e-portfolio as well as providing regular support and coaching sessions.

Other aspects of the induction programme include information about how to meet the entrustable professional activities (EPAs) that form the e-portfolio, how to get the most out of feedback and assessment sessions, and how to recognise and instil a positive learning culture in everyday practice.

Learning materials on the induction include interactive quizzes as well as videos, including RCVS Director of Education, Dr Linda Prescott-Clements, in conversation with leading international educationalists.

Linda said: “I would encourage all those veterinary surgeons who have graduated this year and are starting work to undertake this short induction and begin VetGDP as soon as they can. It acts both as a bite-sized introduction to some of the key concepts within the Programme, as well as providing information about techniques you can use to get the most out of your feedback sessions with the VetGDP Advisers and your general learning and development.

“The induction should take no longer than one hour to complete and can be completed very flexibly around work commitments, so please do make sure to take a look.”

The induction is the latest module to be added to the RCVS Academy which was launched in June 2022 and includes content about effective workplace delegation, leadership, understanding the RCVS guidance on ownership and consent, and how to resolve complaints.

The RCVS Academy can be accessed on the website, and it is updated regularly with new courses and learning materials.
