A leading Ireland vet practice has received a glowing endorsement of its top-quality care for cats with a silver award from the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM). MyVet Lucan, which is owned by Linnaeus, has been recognised as a cat-friendly clinic (CFC) by the prestigious ISFM.
MyVet’s cat advocate Eve Mahon says the recognition is a testament to the practice’s continued dedication and efforts to provide cats with a stress-free and welcoming environment. Eve said: “We’re very proud to have achieved silver cat-friendly clinic status. It really has been a big team effort and is a fitting reward for everyone’s hard work. Often, cats tend to hide any sickness or pain as long as possible, so when they are presented into the clinic, they are usually quite sick and need urgent veterinary care.
“Everyone on the team is hugely passionate about their health and well-being. It is a collective goal at MyVet Lucan to always provide them with the highest level of care in a safe environment to help them heal quickly.”
The ISFM launched the cat-friendly clinic initiative to encourage veterinary clinics like MyVet Lucan to make changes to improve the welfare of cats in their care. The programme advises practices on how to make their environment as welcoming as possible for cats, as well as providing support in staff training, handling techniques and cat-specific client care.
Eve continued: “Our commitment starts right from when our patients enter the practice. Our waiting area has a separate area cordoned off for cats and their owners, which is tucked away so they can’t see any other pets coming into the clinic.
“We also have dedicated cat consult rooms specifically designed with a play area, scratching posts, and tables where cats can easily jump off and explore. We also have a device called the Feliway adapter, which is always plugged in to release happy hormones, helping them to relax.
“What’s more, all our staff are trained to use fear free methods and handling techniques that minimise stress during an examination. This level of training extends across the board with one of our receptionists, Kim Byrne, even completing the ISFM cat-friendly receptionist course to help ensure a stress-free visit for all our feline patients.”
MyVet’s Lucan practice is also equipped with all the right facilities and medical equipment to help keep cats comfortable should the need for an overnight stay arise. The kennels are built in a way to allow for them to stay isolated if needed and it even has hiding caves in case feline patients want some peace and quiet.
