CVTC opens new nurse training centre in Dereham

The new satellite centre will be Vetskill and RCVS approved and will specialise in training Student Nurses and Patient Care Assistants

CVTC has opened the doors to a brand new nurse training satellite centre in Dereham.

The second of CVS’ UK nurse training centres, CVTC Dereham is situated near the site of CVS’ small animal The Grove Hospital and Veterinary Clinic in Norfolk.

The new satellite centre will be Vetskill and RCVS approved and will specialise in training Student Nurses (SVNs) and Patient Care Assistants as well as running a range of post-qualification diplomas and evening CPD events.

The centre will offer day release classroom-based Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing, along with online courses including a Level 2 certificate in Veterinary Care Support and a Level 5 Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Practice Nurse).

The teaching staff working at the training centre are qualified tutors and registered veterinary nurses. Collectively they have a significant number of years’ experience in first opinion, referral nursing, locum nursing, head nursing, practice management and behaviour.

The centre also houses all facilities and equipment needed for nurse theoretical and practical training, including modern and spacious classrooms with smartboard technology.

The first cohort of students are due to start at Dereham in May 2023. Applications are also now open for a September 2023 cohort of student veterinary nurses and April 2023 for the Certificate in Veterinary Care Support online course.

Celine Organ, centre manager of CVTC Dereham said: “Our veterinary nurses are so important to us. They play such a critical role in our animal care. So we are thrilled to be opening a second dedicated training facility for them. Our new Dereham centre will offer the highest quality courses, led by some of the industry’s most experienced tutors and with some of the best facilities in the sector.”

The opening of CVTC Dereham follows an open day celebration of the relocation to a new site for CVTC Chester in August 2022.

To celebrate the event, attendees heard from guest speaker Sarah Heath, a veterinary specialist in behaviour medicine, who gave an inspiring talk on how to understand and help animals after the effects of the pandemic.

Established in 2009 and originally based within CVS’ Chestergates veterinary hospital, CVTC Chester has moved into a new independent building with spacious classrooms and breakout areas for practical sessions.

CVTC now sees 100 students pass through its doors each year, doubling its team of tutors and IQA staff as a result. It also provides training support for 38 practices.

The CVTC site has exceeded national average ‘first time pass rates’ in almost all veterinary nursing modules, according to the latest VetSkill data. It was also rated Good by OFSTED, following its first full inspection conducted in November 2022. In addition, the centre rated excellent on the find an apprenticeship service by employers.
