The neutering: protect and prevent theme of Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW), which takes place this week (June 26 to June 30) follows consumer research showing that over a third of rabbits don’t need to be neutered. Specifically, research commissioned by Burgess Pet Care found that:
- 34 percent of consumers said that rabbits do not need spaying or castrating
- 75 percent believe you don’t need to neuter rabbits if they are of the same sex
Peter Lancaster, head of marketing at Burgess Pet Care, says “Our research, which had over 1,600 respondents including rabbit owners, clearly shows there is a lack of understanding of neutering and the benefits of doing so.
“Neutering not only prevents unplanned litters, but, with around 80 percent of unneutered female rabbits developing uterine tumours after the age of three years, it is really important that they are neutered. We hope that by choosing neutering as the theme of this year’s RAW, we can help rabbits enjoy longer, healthier lives.”
Vets are urged to support the campaign and encouraged to download the information pack, which boasts a wealth of resources, and help support rabbit owners to get into good habits for rabbit care.
