March is Pet Poisoning Awareness Month, and TVM is helping veterinary practices raise awareness of the dangers posed to pets in the spring months through a series of educational posters.
These can be used in waiting rooms, and leaflets which can be added to puppy packs.
The anti-tox materials have been designed to make pet owners aware of the common dangers present during spring and provide them with help and advice to protect their pets.
The eye-catching poster provides information on common dangers such as:
- Lilies, which can cause kidney failure in cats
- Chocolate and sweet treats containing Xylitol
- Raisins, currants and sultanas found in hot cross buns which can cause kidney failure in dogs
- Garden dangers such as fertilizers and weedkillers, mouldy food used in composting, slug pellets and plant bulbs
- Adders, which, as the weather gets warmer, wake up from hibernation and can bite inquisitive pets
As well as focusing on common dangers, the posters also reinforce the importance of S.P.E.E.D when dealing with poisoned pets:
- Stop the pet eating any more suspected poison
- Phone the vets
- Emergency appointment
- Evidence – bring labels/samples/vomit
- Don’t delay!
Nicki Glen, Marketing Project Manager at TVM, explains: “Spring is a lovely time to get out and about with your pets however there are potential hazards you can encounter on your walks and in the garden.
“Easter is also on its way which means there are treats in abundance so it’s vital to reinforce the dangers that you can encounter in your everyday routines to help protect pets from poisoning which can cause serious illness or worse.’
As well as making the posters available, TVM will be running its annual social media campaign covering the most common spring dangers, allowing practices to easily share the content digitally with their clients.
