NOAH welcomes new GB Veterinary Medicines Regulations

Replacing the outdated 2013 framework, the VMR will provide a more streamlined and efficient regulatory environment

NOAH (The National Office of Animal Health) welcomes the implementation of the new GB Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR), which come into effect on Friday 17 May 2024.

The new regulations, which were approved by both houses of parliament in April, mark a significant step forward for the UK animal health sector. Replacing the outdated 2013 framework, the VMR will provide a more streamlined and efficient regulatory environment, fostering innovation and investment within the industry.

Dawn Howard, NOAH chief executive, said, “This is a momentous occasion for the UK animal health sector. The 2013 regulations were no longer fit for purpose, and these reforms were essential to ensure the industry’s continued growth and success.”

NOAH commends the efforts of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) in developing the new regulations. The VMD’s commitment to open consultation with stakeholders throughout the process has ensured the final framework reflects the needs of all parties involved.

“We are grateful to the VMD for their tireless work in drafting these regulations and for their openness to feedback from industry, and hope that this dialogue can continue,” Mrs Howard added. “A robust and modern regulatory framework that is fit for the future is essential for animal health businesses to operate with confidence and invest in the UK.”

The animal health industry is a critical contributor to the UK economy, generating significant value and supporting high-skilled jobs. NOAH believes the new VMRs will help to unlock the industry’s full potential, leading to a greater range of veterinary medicines for animals across the UK.
