The recently published WSAVA global guidelines in reproduction control highlight the latest science-based information on neutering and detail the potential benefits of non-surgical castration.
In response to the new scientific evidence and seismic shift in thinking on the current practices of neutering, Virbac is pleased to offer veterinary surgeons & veterinary nurses the opportunity to access a range of reproductive learning content covering key points of the WSAVA’s report and up-to-date information and advice. The report highlights concerns about increasing moves to early neutering or for neutering to be used as a method of behavioural control, as not all aggressive behaviours are testosterone-related, so using a castration trial with long-acting GnRH agonist is recommended by the report before irreversible orchiectomy is performed. In addition, there is also evidence that gonadectomy may contribute to the development of some tumours, which is currently under intense investigation, as is the effect of age on castration
SUPRELORIN is a sustained-release implant containing deslorelin (a GnRH super agonist) and is licensed for use in sexually mature male dogs and cats from 3 months of age that have not been neutered to make them temporarily infertile. The implant is inserted subcutaneously under the loose skin on the back between the lower neck and the lumbar area. Conveniently, implantation is a quick procedure and does not require anaesthesia or hospitalisation.
SUPRELORIN is available in two presentations: a 4.7mg implant that lasts for at least 6 months and a 9.4mg implant that lasts for at least 12 months in dogs.
