Arthrocentesis of the shoulder

Analysis of synovial fluid from joints is a useful and minimally invasive method to examine joint pathology. The procedure is relatively easy to perform.

To perform shoulder arthrocentesis, the greater tubercle of the humerus and the acromion process of the scapula are identified as landmarks. The needle will be introduced slightly distal and caudal to the acromion.
