New BSAVA Guide to Nutrition in Small Animal Practice now available

The new guide provides a comprehensive resource to help veterinary professionals give guidance on appropriate nutrition for companion animals, including feeding for specific situations and diseases

The BSAVA has released the BSAVA Guide to Nutrition in Small Animal Practice as the latest edition to the series of BSAVA guides.

Nutrition is the cornerstone of good health and well-being for pets. The new guide provides a comprehensive resource to help veterinary professionals give guidance on appropriate nutrition for animals under their care.

Divided into five sections, the guide covers the importance of nutrition and nutritional assessment; diet types; feeding for different life stages; feeding for specific situations; and feeding for specific diseases. A suite of online resources to accompany the guide, including client handouts and videos, are available via the BSAVA Library.

Through decades of innovation, research and development, there are now many excellent diets to feed pets that are safe, and which deliver everything a cat or dog needs in optimal quantities. For healthy pets, the aim of these diets is to maintain good health and quality of life for as long as possible. When nutritional requirements change in times of illness or disease, the aim is to support the animal on their return to good health, or aid in the management of their disease.

Julian Hoad, BSAVA president, said: “The guide has been put together by a panel who are very competent in their field and wish for the reader to become confident and competent as well. What really stands out to me is the level of detail included in the guide. There is ample explanation of the underlying principles of nutrition, as well as formulae for specific nutritional plans. Where there may be confusion, or potential errors in calculating nutritional requirements, there are practical hints and tips for avoiding those pitfalls.”

The guide will make a valuable addition to any clinic bookshelf and is perfect for quick referencing during appointments, in-depth case planning or team training sessions.

Copies of the BSAVA Guide to Nutrition in Small Animal Practice can be purchased online from the BSAVA store priced at £32.50 for BSAVA members and £50 for non-members.
