The College of Animal Welfare (CAW) has announced the launch of its new City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Supporting Well-being and Mental Health of Self and Others – a short, online qualification designed to help those working within the veterinary profession better understand and support mental health in the workplace.
This recognised qualification can be completed in just eight hours of learning over a one-month period, making it an ideal option for busy veterinary professionals seeking flexible, accessible training. The course aims to provide veterinary professionals with the knowledge and confidence to recognise mental health challenges, offer appropriate support to colleagues, and maintain their own well-being in demanding clinical environments. It offers an accessible introduction to wellbeing principles and strategies, making it particularly valuable for head nurses, practice managers, clinical supervisors, and others with a responsibility for supporting team members within a veterinary practice setting.
Delivered online, learners will explore topics such as understanding mental health and well-being, recognising the signs of mental health concerns, supporting others effectively, and promoting resilience and positive communication within teams. The qualification encourages learners to develop empathy, awareness, and practical skills that can help foster a supportive workplace culture.
Kirsty Jones, deputy manager distance learning at The College of Animal Welfare, said of the launch: “The wellbeing of veterinary teams has never been more important. This course offers a valuable opportunity for those in leadership and supervisory roles to develop practical strategies for supporting both their colleagues and themselves. By equipping veterinary professionals with an understanding of mental health and the confidence to have meaningful conversations, we can help build healthier, more compassionate workplaces.”
This short course is ideal for veterinary professionals who want to take an active role in promoting wellbeing within their teams and contribute to a positive workplace culture. Practices will also benefit from staff members who are better equipped to recognise signs of stress, support colleagues effectively, and help maintain morale and productivity in the workplace.
The total cost is £25 for the course plus a £25 registration fee (currently free until 31 December 2025). There’s also a remote exam option available for an additional £34.
