Two equine friends chosen as #NEF26 cover stars

The National Equine Forum (NEF) organising committee has chosen a picture pair of horses grazing together in perfect harmony as the winner of its recent photography competition

The winning image, taken by Ellie Taylor, will feature on the programme cover for the 34th National Equine Forum, which takes place on Thursday 5th March 2026 (#NEF26).

Amateur equine photographers from around the world submitted a beautiful variety of equine images, including stunning vistas from ‘between the ears’, grazing horses and ponies and windswept UK mountain and moorlands.  Five of the pictures submitted have been accepted by the British Equine Trade Association for their 2026 calendar competition.

Robbie, the bay gelding in the picture, is owned by Ellie, while Tilly, the appaloosa mare is owned by one of Ellie’s best friends. Robbie was previously a racehorse and Tilly was a leisure riding horse before they were retired. They lived together for a couple of years in Devon and formed a strong friendship, as can be seen from the photograph.

“I loved looking after Robbie and Tilly as they started retired life together – they had a special bond so it’s lovely that this moment has made the front cover of the NEF programme,” said Ellie. “They are both continuing their (hopefully) happy retirements, albeit now in different herds in different counties.”

“Ellie’s picture is a gorgeous reflection of perfect harmony between two field companions,” said NEF publicity officer Sarah Shephard. “It’s the first time we have featured two horses on the NEF programme. We feel that Robbie and Tilly are very deserving of this accolade, not least because they look so content together, showing the joy of companionship.”

The National Equine Forum is an annual event bringing together representatives from all echelons of the equestrian industry, including government, equestrian sport, veterinary science and welfare. It has been running for more than 30 years and is organised by a committee reflecting various sectors of the equestrian industry.
