World Pet Obesity Week launched with obesity survey

This World Pet Obesity Week (6 to 12 October), alongside a host of feeding and weight resources, the Association for Pet Obesity and Prevention  has launched its obesity and nutrition survey for vets, pet owners and members of the pet health industry

The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP) announced today the launch of its 2025 pet obesity and nutrition opinion survey.

The survey opens October 1 2025, to coincide with World Pet Obesity Week (October 6–12, 2025) and will remain open through December 31 2025. It invites veterinary professionals, pet owners, and members of the pet health industry worldwide to share their perspectives on how obesity and nutrition are perceived and managed in companion animals.

Alongside the survey, APOP and the World Pet Obesity Association (WPOA) are introducing new free tools and resources, including:

  • Daily feeding calculators for dogs and cats to help determine the appropriate calorie intake for maintaining a healthy body condition

  • Step weight loss calculator to guide veterinary teams through safe, gradual weight loss programmes

  • Pet weight check estimator, which provides breed-specific weight ranges combined with a simple three-step check for pet owners

  • Multilingual body condition score (BCS) charts using a standardised nine-point system for dogs, cats, rabbits, and horses. Multilingual translations are available here.

  • Daily energy needs (MER) calculator for veterinary professionals to create accurate, customised feeding plans based on life stage and activity level

A toolkit of educational materials and shareable graphics is also available for veterinary teams, universities, and organizations to use during World Pet Obesity Week and beyond.

“These resources and calculators make it easier for pet owners and veterinary teams to work together to prevent and treat obesity,” said Dr Ernie Ward, founder of APOP. “They also provide consistent, science-based guidance that helps improve conversations about nutrition, feeding, and long-term pet health.”

The Global Pet Obesity Initiative is about bringing together veterinary teams, pet owners, and organizations worldwide to address one of the most common health challenges facing our pets,” said Laura Ward, executive director of APOP. “By sharing knowledge and resources, we can create a more consistent and compassionate approach to preventing and treating obesity in companion animals.

Veterinary practices, organisations, and industry partners worldwide are encouraged to share the survey link with their teams, clients, and audiences to broaden participation and ensure diverse representation. Practices and universities may also sign up now to receive information about the 2026 Pet Obesity Prevalence Survey.
